MCSN Adopts Log-Based Royalty Distribution Model
MCSN has implemented a log-based royalty distribution model, replacing the previous general distribution approach with a system that ties payments directly to verifiable usage data from licensed platforms and venues.
Overview
MCSN has transitioned to a log-based royalty distribution model, fundamentally changing how royalties are calculated and paid to members. Under this system, royalty payments are no longer based on general or blanket distribution formulas. Instead, every payment is tied to verifiable usage data collected from radio stations, television broadcasters, digital platforms, and public performance venues.
This shift ensures that members are compensated based on actual documented usageof their works, bringing MCSN's distribution practices in line with international collective management standards.
How It Works
The log-based distribution model operates through four key stages, from data collection to final payment:
Usage Collection
Usage logs are collected from licensed broadcasters (radio and television stations), digital streaming platforms, and public performance venues. These logs record what music was played, when, and for how long.
Work Identification
Collected usage data is matched against MCSN’s registered works database using song titles, composer and publisher information, and international identifiers such as ISRC and ISWC codes.
Royalty Calculation
Royalties are calculated based on the frequency of plays, duration of usage, platform type, and the licensing fees collected from each source. Works that appear more frequently in usage logs receive proportionally higher allocations.
Distribution
Members receive itemized royalty statements with detailed breakdowns showing exactly which works generated income, from which sources, and how their payment was calculated.
Critical Requirement: Register Your Works
Under the log-based model, only registered works can be matched to usage logs. This is a fundamental change from previous distribution methods. If a composition is played on radio, streamed online, or performed at a licensed venue but is not registered in MCSN's database, it will not generate any royalty payment for the rights holder.
Unregistered compositions generate no payment even if played frequently across multiple platforms. Members must ensure all their works are registered and metadata is accurate.
Data Sources
MCSN collects usage data from multiple sources to ensure comprehensive coverage of music usage across Nigeria:
Broadcast Logs
Playlists and programme logs from licensed radio and television stations documenting all music aired
Performance Records
Set lists and usage reports from live performance venues, hotels, restaurants, and event organizers
Programme Schedules
Scheduled broadcast data from networks providing advance and retrospective music usage information
Verified Usage Reports
Audited reports from digital platforms and other licensed users confirming actual music consumption
Benefits of Log-Based Distribution
The transition to log-based distribution represents a significant improvement for all MCSN members:
A Note to Members
The log-based model rewards members who take ownership of their catalogue by keeping registrations current and metadata accurate. MCSN encourages all members to review their registered works and ensure completeness to maximise their royalty earnings under this new system.
